Cruising Barkley Sound February 24, 2017 Conrad Wharton This article, by Conrad Wharton, is from the February 2017 issue of 48° North.. It was mid April and still raining, even after two cups of coffee.
Barkley Sound, also known historically as Barclay Sound, is south of Ucluelet and north of Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island and forms the entrance to the Alberni Inlet. The Broken Islands Group lies in the sound. Barkley Sound is part of the traditional territory of the Nuu-cha-nulth First Nations.
Diving in Barkley Sound is excellent, thanks to the rich and diverse marine life, numerous reefs and up to 60 old shipwrecks in the area. This area has been called the Graveyard of the Pacific because many navigators from days past would mistake Barkley Sound for the Juan de Fuca Strait, ending up on the many reefs and islands that dot the sound.
